Drew Carey still not dating 5 years after fiancée’s brutal murder
Drew Carey may be known for his quick wit and charm as a beloved TV host, but behind the laughter lies a haunting tragedy.
The murder of his former fiancée, Amie Harwick, continues to cast a dark shadow over his life.
Inside Drew Carey’s traumatic childhood
Being a Hollywood star isn’t always as glamorous as it seems—your private life is constantly under the microscope. And when you’ve faced real-life struggles, the speculation only intensifies. But one celebrity who has taken control of his own story is TV host and actor Drew Carey.
Talking openly about difficult and tragic experiences is never easy, but I hope Drew’s heartbreaking journey can encourage others to speak out about their own struggles. You don’t have to do it in public, but Drew has used his platform time and time again to help those who’ve been through their own horrors.
What many may not know about Drew Carey, 66, is that his childhood was tough.
His father passed away from a heart attack when Drew was just 8 years old —something that understandably left a huge impact on the young boy’s psyche. School wasn’t easy for him either, as he was expelled twice for poor academic performance.

But it was the sudden death of his father that cast a dark shadow over his early years growing up in Cleveland, Ohio.
“My dad died when I was a kid, and soon after that, I started biting my nails,” he shared.
“It got so bad that I was biting my cuticles, the pads of my fingers, tearing the skin until they bled. It hurt to even hold a pencil, and I was ashamed of how my hands looked.”
Suicide attempts
Drew and his two brothers were raised by their mother, who worked two jobs to make ends meet.
”I have been in a lot of desperate situations,” Drew told the Kirkland Reporter in 2010.
He also revealed that he was once molested, struggled with bouts of depression, and made two suicide attempts by swallowing a large number of sleeping pills.
After leaving university, Carey enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1980 and served for six years as a field radio operator in the 25th Marine Regiment in Ohio. He adopted his crew cut hairstyle while serving in the military.
He later opened up about his suicide attempts, explaining that he first tried at 18 and again in his twenties.
“I didn’t know what I was doing,” Carey admitted. “The first time, I drank a couple of beers and took a whole bottle of Sominex, thinking it would work. My fraternity brothers rushed me to the medical center, and as I was throwing up, my friend Paul started singing the Sominex jingle: ‘Take Sominex tonight and sleep… sleep… sleep.’ I laughed so hard in that moment. Humor has always been my way out.”
Thankfully, Drew Carey turned things around. He began to rediscover himself, with the help of books and therapy. He learned to cope with his depression in a healthier way.
“I started reading books by Wayne Dyer, and one of them really hit me: Why am I walking around feeling guilty about everything? I realized I had been apologizing for existing.”
The tragedy in 2020
Since 2007, Drew Carey has been the host of the iconic game show The Price Is Right. He also made the decision to lose weight, and for a while, it seemed like his life was on the right track.
But in 2020, disaster struck with full force. That year, the heartbreaking news broke that Drew Carey’s former fiancée, Dr. Amie Harwick, had been tragically murdered.
In January 2018, Drew and Amie were more in love than ever, and the couple excitedly announced their engagement, revealing they’d been together for six unforgettable months before deciding to take the next step and marry.
At the time, Amie Harwick worked as a licensed marriage and family therapist, as well as an accomplished author, having written self-help books such as The New Sex Bible for Women.
She had earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology and later received a Master’s degree in clinical psychology from Pepperdine University. Her Instagram and website showcased her role as an educator, advocate for women, and a well-known Hollywood personality.
Unfortunately, Drew and Amie’s relationship came to an end pretty short after they met. Carey called off their engagement in November 2018, and the couple parted ways.
Still loved each other
Despite their breakup, there was no denying the strong affection they still had for each other. In fact, Drew got emotional when he spoke about their time together on his Sirius XM show ”Drew Carey’s Friday Night Freak-Out.”
During one broadcast, Carey recalled that in September 2018, he had been in the ”best relationship” of his life with Amie. He admitted that even after their breakup, they still loved one another.

Drew described Amie as fun, beautiful, and someone who truly cared about others, and it brought him joy to witness her improve their lives.
He fondly remembered how, when they were together, he would send her setlists for his Sirius XM show, and she once got emotional listening to one of his creations. The two would often play it on repeat, singing along while dancing in the kitchen or even slow-dancing in the bathroom.
Drew shared that they would hold hands in the car while listening to their special songs, which held deep sentimental value for them. He played the setlist for his listeners so they could hear just how much he and Amie had loved each other.
A ”bloodcurdling scream”
Given all of this, it’s easy to understand just how shocking it must have been for Drew when he learned that Amie had been murdered. On February 15, 2020, 38-year-old Amie was found severely injured outside her Hollywood Hills home.
Amie Harwick’s roommate, Michael Herman, recounted being awakened by a ”bloodcurdling scream” early that morning. He immediately realized that someone was upstairs attacking Amie.
The murderer was Amie Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, who had assaulted her inside her home.
Three days later, disturbing new reports emerged. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office declared her death a homicide, and it was revealed that Amie had “fallen” from a third-story balcony.
Police observed that the suspect had a black eye and a bite mark on his bicep.
“To us, it was indicative of Amie fighting for her life,” Prosecutor Victor Avila told 48 Hours. “But she was obviously up against a much bigger, stronger opponent.”
According to People, Harwick had previously obtained two restraining orders against Gareth Pursehouse, the man suspected of murdering her. She had dated him more than a decade earlier, before beginning her relationship with Drew.
Pursehouse was initially held on a $2 million bond after his arrest, and he was re-arrested just hours after posting bail. In April 2020, he pleaded not guilty to the murder of his ex-girlfriend. Later, Gareth Pursehouse was convicted of murdering Amie and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The final hours of Amie Harwick
In February 2022, on the second anniversary of Amie Harwick’s tragic death, Drew Carey opened up in an interview with 48 Hours titled ”The Final Hours of Amie Harwick.” He shared that he wasn’t sure if he could ever look at Valentine’s Day the same way again, given the deep emotional toll of her loss.
The television host admitted that he had no desire to celebrate the day anymore, calling it a reminder of pain rather than love. He reflected on how often he thought about Amie, revealing that their relationship had been deeply personal and special, a time when they could truly be themselves with each other.
One of the most heart-wrenching moments Carey shared was that just three days before Amie’s tragic death, he had received a text from her.
“Out of the blue, she texted me: ‘Hey, it’s Amie. I’ve been thinking a lot about forgiveness. I would love to get together and talk.’ I told her I loved her and that I’d see her the next week,” he recalled.
Just days later, Harwick was killed.
“It destroyed me for a while. There was no closure,” Carey said.
“A friend later told me that she shed tears when she read that message. She still cared. I still loved her.”
Met her friends at the funeral
Today, Drew admits he’s very cautious about his mental health, constantly monitoring it to avoid triggers. But despite this, he continues to speak openly about Amie’s death, most recently in an interview with US Weekly.
He shared that he thinks about her ”all the time” and ”every day,” adding, “Her death still affects me and shapes my views on relationships and intimacy.”
”After Amie died and we had the funeral, her three best friends reached out, saying, “We wanted to tell you how much Amie loved you and cared for you and how well she spoke of you.” I was so moved by it. They’ve now become some of my best friends. I also got to reconnect with her mother, father and brother. We held each other up through the funeral and the trial [of Harwick’s ex-boyfriend Gareth Pursehouse, who was convicted of killing her by strangulation and throwing her from the third-floor balcony of her home]. Now Amie’s memory and the things she lived for keep us going,” Drew shared.
It’s clear that this tragedy, along with everything else Drew has gone through in his life, has deeply affected him. I truly admire his strength in sharing such personal and painful experiences so openly. I believe his story has the power to help many who are going through or have gone through similar situations.
Rest in peace, Amie, and Drew, we think you’re truly amazing! Your strength and openness inspire us all.
Innovative shoes help blind people to avoid obstacles
We can get so caught up in our own struggles, and the complications that color or daily lives, that we forget there are people out there who have it so much harder than ourselves.
Almost everyone you meet is fighting one battle or another. Some you might know about, others are more secret in nature. That’s why it’s so important to be considerate at all times and never treat anyone with anything less than the fullest amount of respect.
For me, that’s especially important when interacting with those people whose lives are made harder through disabilities.
It’s not that they need any special treatment, and I’m certainly not suggesting they should be the subjects of pity. No, I mean simply that they so often serve as inspiring figures, and so should be treated as such.
Of course, one way of showing said respect is ensuring you’re educated as to the challenges faced by individuals who live with various disabilities. Take, for example, the visually impaired…
I can’t think of many impairments that would impact my life as much as the loss of my sight. Our eyes allow us to process the world around us; without them we lose a sense that the vast majority of us have been totally reliant on since birth.
And yet there are, of course, people who have severely impaired sight, not to mention those who are blind.
Needless to say, for anyone living with visual impairment, navigating the world becomes a lot harder. Which is why a recent invention by Australian company Tec-Innovation promises to make such a positive change.
As per reports, they’ve created a pair of shoes, called InnoMake, that use advanced sensor technology to help the wearer avoid obstacles they might not be able to see.
The InnoMake shoes have built-in sensors that vibrate or make noise whenever an obstacle is detected, much like the sensors on cars that will beep to warn you of an imminent collision.
According to their YouTube, the shoes have special slots for the sensors, which last up to a week after taking three hours to fully charge.
Not only that, but the shoes can be coupled with a smartphone, allowing the user to customize certain settings, including adjusting the alert preferences or minimum distance for detection.
Have you ever seen anyone wearing shoes like this? Did you know what they mean? Let us know in the comments box.
The fascinating and tragic story of Mary Ann Bevan
In many ways, I’m happy with how far our society has come in 2025. Sure, certain things were better in the old days, but if we look just a few centuries back, there are aspects of everyday life that well and truly belong in the dustbin of history.
In the 19th century, ”freak shows” were one of the most popular attractions out there, and viewed as a normal staple of American culture.
In essence, they were traveling circuses displaying “odd” people – such as bearded ladies and Siamese twins.
One such “odd” person, Mary Ann Bevan, became known as the “Ugliest Woman in the World” – and her remarkable history and tragic fate show why we must never forget her…
Individuals of different ethnicities or with different physical abilities have always fascinated people – but putting them on public display and making money out of them is something that is wrong, no matter the time period we’re talking about.
Today, it’s just unacceptable to treat deformed people as objects of entertainment – but in the 19th century, crowds flocked to see them. From the 1840s to the 1940s, “freak shows” were at the peak of their popularity, and exploitation for profit wasn’t considered morally wrong.
Like everyone else
Therefore, it’s perhaps not so strange that the story of Mary Ann Bevan begins during this particular era in history. She was born Mary Ann Webster on the December 20, 1874, in Plaistow, East London, United Kingdom.
During this time, it was common for there to be veritable crowds of children in almost every working-class family. Mary Ann Webster was one of eight children, and was just like her siblings (six of them being brothers) while growing up.
When her brothers got older, they were sent off to work to provide for the family. But Mary Ann had other opportunities. After finishing her medical studies, the gorgeous brunette became a nurse in 1894. At this point in her life, her future looked promising.
She was a beautiful young woman with delicate features; she had a good education and lived in London. This city was economically prosperous and had become the center of the modern world.
Mary Ann also found love in 1902, when she married Thomas Bevan. The couple were very happy together, welcoming four children during their marriage. Sadly, though, the good times didn’t last forever. After 14 years together, Thomas passed away from a stroke. Mary Ann was devastated, not to mention left alone with her four children.
Unfortunately, other things were also plaguing her mind. An medical issue had started to affect her just after she married Thomas, and it only worsened as the years passed.
Around the age of 32, Mary Ann started showing signs of acromegaly. She must have been terrified when the first symptoms showed up, and sadly, it wasn’t easy to get help for the rare condition.
At that time, acromegaly was an unknown disease, and doctors had little knowledge about how to treat it. Acromegaly is a disorder where the body produces too much growth hormone, resulting in enlarged body tissue and bones. It’s a cruel condition, one that often makes the affected person’s hands and feet three times their usual size.
The disease usually appears after puberty, but in the case of Mary Ann Bevan, the disorder showed up later in life and affected her face. While battling the condition, her face rapidly became larger and more masculine.
Today, we know much more about the disease. For example, we know that it affects as many as six in 100,000 people. The condition can also be treated if it is detected in time. For people who are diagnosed with acromegaly today, for example, life expectancy is equal to that of the general population – providing they receive the proper treatment early on.
But such medical advances were sadly not something that Mary Ann Bevan would benefit from. Instead, she was massively impacted by the disease – both financially and psychologically.
During the period she was married to Thomas, the condition wasn’t too bad. Mary Ann got some comments but could find comfort in her husband, and her family offered support.

When Thomas died, however, the situation escalated, and it became difficult for Mary Ann to provide for her children. Her physical changes were drastic, and the condition plagued her whole body. She went from a stunning young mother to a crestfallen, unrecognizable widow in just a few years.
With her appearance changing, no one wanted to hire her anymore. Her employers didn’t want to have a deformed woman who attracted attention working for them – many of them were also frightened when they saw Mary Ann’s enormous face.
Then, one day, Mary Ann saw an ad in the newspaper that would change her whole life. The ad stated the following:
“Wanted: Ugliest woman. Nothing repulsive, maimed or disfigured. Good pay guaranteed, and long engagement for successful applicant. Send recent photograph.”
The man behind the ad was a man named Claude Bartram. He worked as an agent for an American circus, Barnum, and Bailey. With debts and bills piling up, Mary Ann saw no choice but to answer the ad.
She didn’t do it to get famous or rich – it was all about putting food on the table for her beloved children. Mary Ann was a mother above all else.
After Mary Ann sent in a photograph of herself, Bartram reached out to her. The photos of her later became widely known among the public.
But while many people just saw a scary picture of a giant woman, Bartram saw something more. There were details in Mary Ann’s face and personality that went unnoticed.

“She was not repulsive at all. She had the kind of face one usually finds in a giant, a powerful, masculine jaw, prominent cheek-bones, nose and forehead, but she was unblemished, healthy and strong. She told me she did not like the idea of placing herself on exhibition, she was shy and did not want to be separated from her children,” Bartram later explained, according to Daily Star.
“I told her she would earn £10 per week for a year, travelling expenses and all the money from the sale of picture postcards of herself, so she could provide for the education of her children.”
Mary Ann wavered but finally agreed.
At the beginning of her new career, she attracted a lot of attention and was so successful that she was invited to the Dreamland Circus in Coney Island.

In 1920, she took the boat over the Atlantic, and when she arrived in New York, Mary Ann was already a famous face. Almost every newspaper in the Big Apple had a picture of her on the cover as Mary Ann was dubbed “The Ugliest Woman on Earth”.
Mary Ann Bevan would become a massive star at the Coney Island Circus, which was run by Samuel Gumpertz, a successful Missouri showman.
The newcomer from England outshone her circus colleagues, and Mary Ann became the big attraction, in competition with bearded ladies, conjoined twins, and other people with various physical disabilities.
But some people saw the immorality of putting people on display in the circus. Exploiting freak show performers’ disabilities for profit stirred up emotions, even in the 19th century. One doctor, leading neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing, took action and demanded they leave Mary Ann alone.

”This unfortunate woman who sits in the sideshow of Ringling Brothers ‘between Fat Lady and Armless Wonder’ and ‘affects white lace hats, woollen mittens and high laced shoes’ has a story which is far from mirth-provoking.
“She, previously a vigorous and good-looking young woman, has become the victim of a disease known as acromegaly,” he wrote in a letter to Time magazine.
But ordinary people still flocked to the circus, and the directors made a lot of money. Unfortunately, Mary Ann had to endure quite a lot in New York. She was forced to wear male clothes to look more unattractive and unfeminine. She also had to put up with comments and laughter, which must have affected her self-esteem.
But there was an upside that convinced her it was worth it. According to the Daily Star, Mary Ann Bevan earned almost $590,000 during her time with the circus. She went through a lot, but she made a fortune. Smiling mechanically, she also offered picture postcards of herself for sale.
The money enabled Mary Ann to send her four children to boarding school in England. Leaving her children on another continent is, of course, a mother’s worst nightmare – but Mary Ann had no choice, and in the end, she did everything to create a better future for her kids.
The self-sacrificing Mary Ann showed what true beauty is: when you are willing to give everything for the people you love.
In 1925, she went back to participate in an exhibition in Paris, but for the rest of her life, she lived in New York and worked at the Coney Island Dreamland Show.
Mary Ann died in 1933 of natural causes. She lived to be 59 years old, and after her death, her children fulfilled Mary Ann’s last wish: to be buried in her birth country. She now rests at the Ladywell and Brockley Cemetery in South London.
I don’t know about you, but Mary Ann has my respect.
Her story shows the sheer determination she had to support her family. In her time, there were no benefits like today; she had to earn a living. She was a truly loving mother, one who put her children first and herself last.
Princess Diana was loved by people everywhere. These rare photos show special moments from her life and her kind nature.
One picture shows Diana skiing in Austria with her sons, Harry and William. Another captures a family trip to Necker Island with her sister’s kids. In one photo, she’s laughing with Harry at Thorpe Park, and in another, she’s showing care while visiting land mine victims in Angola.
In 1985, Diana faced rainy weather in the Outer Hebrides, still looking bright and happy. In her final summer, she enjoyed happy times in St. Tropez with Dodi Al Fayed.
