Beautiful version of ‘Imagine’ played at Jimmy Carter’s funeral

Jimmy Carter was a great man who deserved a great send-off, and by all accounts that’s exactly what he got.

The former President of the United States had been in ill-health for some time before his passing on December 29, 2024. Indeed, it was back in 2015 that he was diagnosed with cancer, while he entered end-of-life hospice care in early 2023.

Though he exceeded even the most optimistic of timelines by living almost two years after being admitted to hospice, Carter passed away just two days before the turn of the new year, prompting an outpour of tributes.

Given the impact the former peanut farmer-turned statesman had – both during his time in the White House and after it – it should come as no surprise that his funeral, which took place on Thursday, January 9, was an eye-catching affair that promised a who’s who of names within US politics and beyond.

Jimmy Carter funeral

One of the most touching moments of the sendoff at the Washington National Cathedral came courtesy of country music stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, both known to be friends of Carter.

The duo gave a poignant rendition of John Lennon’s Imagine, just over a year after they delivered a performance of the same song at the funeral for Carter’s wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter.

Needless to say, the mirroring aspect of the tributes at the two funerals struck a heartwarming chord with people online, many of whom took to social media to share their condolences.

After the service in Washington, former president Carter’s body was flown back to Georgia for a private funeral service in his hometown of Plains. The service took place at the Maranatha Baptist Church, where Carter taught Sunday school.

Carter was then taken by motorcade for a private internment beside his wife.

Rest in peace, Jimmy Carter.

Malia Obama, 25, debuts new name as she begins Hollywood career

Malia Obama, daughter of former POTUS and FLOTUS Barack and Michelle Obama, is now a grown woman who is slowly forging a new path for herself – and she’s even decided to change her name.

The 25-year-old recently showcased her directorial debut, The Heart, at the Sundance Film Festival.

Interestingly, the film’s credits notably didn’t include her family surname.

Born Malia Ann Obama on July 4, 1998, her middle name pays tribute to her paternal grandmother, who succumbed to ovarian cancer at 52 in 1995. Growing up in the limelight as the President’s daughter and graduating from Harvard, Malia opted to explore a career in screenwriting.

In her latest project, The Heart, where Malia assumes the roles of director and screenwriter, she adopted the pseudonym Malia Ann. Making a striking appearance on the festival’s red carpet earlier this year, Malia enjoyed the premiere of her movie.

Though, this venture into filmmaking isn’t Malia’s inaugural foray into the industry. In 2021, she contributed to the writing team for the series Swarm, which later streamed on Amazon Prime. With notable cast members such as Billie Eilish and Rory Culkin, Swarm marked a promising start to her professional journey.

“Some of her pitches were wild as hell, and they were just so good and so funny. She’s an incredible writer,” Swarm co-creator Janine Nabers told E! Online about Malia’s talent. “She brought a lot to the table… She’s really, really dedicated to her craft.”

Despite her prominent lineage, executive producer of Swarm Stephen Glover was quick to say that Malia was treated no differently from other members of the creative team.

“We can’t be easy on her just because she’s the [former] President’s daughter,” he admitted to Vanity Fair. “Nah, she’s very down to earth and cool. So, it’s not a problem at all.”

Proud parents Barack and Michelle Obama have openly expressed their pride in Malia, showering her with affectionate birthday wishes on her recent 25th birthday.

“Happy birthday to this talented, hilarious, and beautiful young woman,” Barack wrote on Instagram. “Malia, I hope 25 brings you everything you’re looking for and more.”

Michelle echoed her husband’s words, posting: “Happy birthday, Malia! I feel so lucky to be your mom and to be able to watch you become the wonderful young woman you are today. Love you so much! ?”

From Malia Obama to Malia Ann, from the President’s daughter to a budding Hollywood screenwriter and director, it’s clear that there is a bright future ahead!

Canadian Premier Says He’ll Cut Off Power To 1.5 Million Americans After Trump Announced New Tariffs

A Canadian Premier has said that he will cut power to 1.5 million Americans after Donald Trump announced new tarrifs. The president, not long after his return to the White House, signed off an what some are calling ‘catastrophic’ tariffs to ‘hold China, Mexico and Canada accountable for their promises to halt the flood of poisonous drugs into the US’ by putting 25% tarifs of imported goods from Canada, Mexico and 10% on China.Trump then explained that the only ‘solution’ for Canada to avoid the tariffs was to become a ‘cherished 51st State’.Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, released a statement on March 3 that read: “Today, after a 30-day pause, the United States administration has decided to proceed with imposing 25 percent tariffs on Canadian exports and 10 per cent tariffs on Canadian energy. Let me be unequivocally clear – there is no justification for these actions.”The White House then release a statement that the tariffs are Trump ‘taking bold action to hold Mexico, Canada, and China accountable to their promises of halting illegal immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country’.The order reads: “There is growing production of fentanyl in Canada, and enough fentanyl was seized at the northern border last fiscal year to kill 9.8 million Americans.“Additionally, illegal border crossings from Canada reached historic new highs every year for the last four fiscal years.”Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared in a news conference last week: “If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do anything, including cutting off their energy — with a smile on my face.“They need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard? We’ve got to go back twice as hard.”Speaking to NBC, Ford said: “We [Ontario] keep the lights on in 1.5 million homes and [in] manufacturing in New York, in Michigan, and in Minnesota.“If he wants to destroy our economy and our families, I will shut down the electricity going into the US.”As reported by the Toronto Sun, he said: “If they want to try to annihilate Ontario, I will do everything — including cut off their energy with a smile on my face.“They rely on our energy, they need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we’re going to come back twice as hard.”He added: “That’s exactly what we’re going to do.“The provinces have a big say in it, but it’s the federal government that’s leading the charge, and we’re going to stand shoulder-to-shoulder no matter who’s in the federal government.”Like this:Like Loading…
