John Wayne Needed to Be ‘Bullied’ to Get a Good Performance out of Him – My Blog

John Wayne‘s critics often pointed out that his style of performance wasn’t really acting, but him simply playing himself. However, that isn’t to say that he didn’t earn praise for movies, such as the Oscar-winning True Grit. Wayne’s The Horse Soldiers co-star William Holden said that the actor was “bullied” to get a good performance out of him.

‘The Horse Soldiers’ star John Wayne had issues to deal with on the set

The Horse Soldiers set had non-performance issues for Wayne. Michael Munn’s John Wayne: The Man Behind the Myth explored the difficulties he encountered throughout production. His wife, Pilar, developed a dependence on sleeping pills, so Wayne had his mind on personal matters outside of his performance.

“It was a difficult picture to make all round,” director of photographer William H. Clothier said. “Pilar had become addicted to sleeping pills and Duke insisted she join him on location so he could keep an eye on her. Before they left home, she had run out of pills and after a day without them she got terrible withdrawal symptoms.”
Clothier continued: “Her doctor wanted to put her in a private sanatorium for people with drink and drug problems. But Duke wanted her in Louisiana and said he’d be with her as much as he could. So she arrived in Alexandria where we were based with little Aissa and a couple of maids.”

Munn wrote that it was Holden’s first time working with director John Ford, who was battling alcoholism, and Holden swore to work with him ever again. The actor recalled Ford’s cruel behavior toward Wayne for the sake of a better performance from him. However, it initially started with the filmmaker telling the actors that they aren’t allowed to have any alcohol.
“I liked Duke a lot,” Holden said. “I wasn’t sure how we’d get on, but he was a really nice guy. But I was pretty disgusted with the way Ford treated him. Ford would yell at him and treat him like he was a newcomer. I said to Duke, ‘Why do you let that old bastard treat you like that?’ He said, ‘Aw, Bill, that’s just his way of making sure I give him a good performance.’”
Holden continued: “I said, ‘Duke, you’ve been at this longer than me. You got nominated for an Oscar, didn’t you?’ He said, ‘Yeah!’ I said, ‘And what film was that for?’ Of course I knew the answer. Sands of Iwo Jima. I said to Duke, ‘Did Ford get a good performance out of you for that?’ He said, ‘Ford didn’t direct Iwo Jima.’ I said, ‘That’s what I mean.’ But Duke would just do anything for Ford, and I admired his loyalty.”
William Holden would never allow John Ford to treat him the same way
Holden would never allow Ford to give him the same treatment that he gave Wayne for the sake of performance. However, he was much more outspoken regarding his feelings toward the filmmaker.
“But I wasn’t having Ford talk to me that way,” Holden said, according to Munn. “I told him [and] said, ‘Jack, I’ll sweat blood to give you a good performance, but if you ever talk to me that way you talk to Duke, I’ll walk off and I won’t come back.’ Ford said, ‘Oh Bill, I don’t need to force a good performance out of you. I saw Sunset Boulevard. You’re twice the actor Duke is. He needs me to bully him.’”
Holden continued: “I couldn’t believe it. I never worked for Ford again. I never worked with Duke again, either, but that’s just because nothing came along that suited us both.”
Holden snuck Wayne away from Ford for a whole day by scheduling a teeth cleaning appointment, where they day drank afterward.
Clothier recalled: “When Ford found out, he was furious. He went into one of the worst tantrums I’ve ever seen. You’d think Duke had broken all Ten Commandments. Ford would go sneaking into Duke’s room looking for bottles.”

Singer turns 58, people barely recognize Samantha Fox

If you are someone who was attuned to the celebrity scene in the 1980s, then you might remember Samantha Fox. She started out as a model, and by the end, her career had led to her becoming a musician.

Her mother, Carole Ann was an actress, and father, John Patrick was a carpenter. They were married from 1965 to 1988. Her mother passed away 2013, while her father passed in 2000.

Samantha Fox began her career when she entered a modeling competition when she was 16 years old. Her mother entered her in the Sunday People’s ‘Face and Shape of 1983’ competition. She ended up being one of the finalists, and the photographer was impressed by her ‘unusual’ proportions and natural beauty.

He said, “face of a child and the body of a woman”, and told her to do some topless shots. She agreed, and that lead to her becoming a regular Page 3 girl in The Sun newspaper from 1983 to 1986.

In the 1980s, she was one of the most photographed people in the UK, and in 1986, she began her music career.

She debuted with her single Touch Me (I Want Your Body) which helped her shoot to fame. She then released more songs like Naughty Girls and more all of which only increased her celebrity. In her personal life, she had her fair share of problems, including a legal battle with her father over mismanagement of her earnings.

Despite all of the issues in her personal life, she wanted to make sure she still released music throughout it. She was always a big advocate for the LGBTQIA+, having married Linda Olsen in 2022. Now at 58 years old, she is still busy in her career.

In 1988, she received a nomination for Best British Female Artist at the Brit Awards. She collaborated with other artists which include the legends Freddie Mercury. She is even working on music now, releasing her latest album in 2023 produced by Ian Masterson.

She married her Norwegian wife, Linda Olsen in 2022 in a ceremony in Essex. The couple had been engaged since February 2020. They met at a concert and Olsen was a fan of the singer. They now live together in East London with Olsen’s son Adam and their two pet cats.

Before marrying Olsen, the singer had dated many people which included men and women. She dated the infamous Peter Foster in the 1980s but did not accept his proposal. She publicly came out as gay in 2003. At the time she made her relationship with then-manager Myra Stratton public. The couple were together for 16 years until Stratton passed due to cancer in 2015.

Samantha Fox later revealed she knew she was gay but did not want to admit it because of the stigma surrounding it.

Fox has said that she knew she was gay before meeting Stratton, but she was afraid to admit it because of the stigma and the pressure from the media.

She described herself as a “very happy woman” who is “very much in love” with Olsen.

It is wonderful to see how Samatha Fox is doing these days. Share this with other fans of the singer so they can see what she has been up to.

Why Should You Place Your Luggage in the Bathroom Right After Checking into a Hotel Room?

When you check into a hotel, experts recommend putting your suitcase in the bathtub, not on the bed or luggage rack. This advice may seem strange, but it’s due to creepy-crawly bugs that can be found on surfaces like beds. The bathtub is considered a safer spot to avoid these pests while you settle in.

Why should you put your luggage in the bathtub?

We’ve got one word for you: bedbugs. Bedbugs are notorious for hitching a ride to your next destination (like your house!) on your clothes and even your bags. If you put your luggage in the bathtub of your hotel room instead of on the bed, you will ensure that those pesky pests stay far away from your personal belongings while you take the time to inspect your room.

Entomologist Katelyn Kesheimer, PhD, advises keeping luggage in the bathroom while checking for bedbugs, especially in hotel rooms. After confirming the room is clear of them, she moves her luggage into the main area but avoids placing it on the bed. Travel expert Marla Cimini also emphasizes that bedbug problems are common across hotels, from luxury to budget, with Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia ranked as the top U.S. cities for bedbug infestations, according to a 2024 Orkin study.

Why is the bathroom a safe place for luggage?

According to Katelyn Kesheimer, PhD, bathrooms are the least likely places to find bedbugs because people spend less time there compared to other areas in the hotel room. Additionally, bathrooms have fewer hiding spots for bedbugs, and towels and bathmats are regularly cleaned between guests, disrupting potential hiding places. Bedbugs also prefer natural surfaces, and tubs and tiles don’t offer these conditions, making the bathroom a safer spot for your luggage.

What should you do if there’s no tub in your hotel bathroom?

Setting your luggage in the shower stall is a perfectly suitable alternative to the bathtub. Just remember to take it out before you turn on the shower!

How to check for bedbugs on the bed

Here’s how to conduct a quick yet thorough search:

Fold the top sheet all the way back, and inspect the top of the bottom sheet.
Untuck the bottom sheet from the sides and corners, and look for evidence in the folds.
Look in the seams of the mattress, along any zippers and in the tufts on the mattress top.
Slide the mattress aside, and inspect the box spring.
Check the headboard, especially if it’s tufted or made of fabric. Look behind the headboard and on the wall behind the bed.

The Misunderstanding That Ended a Marriage: A Lesson in Perception and Trust…

It all started innocently enough—one ordinary day, I sent my husband a picture of myself standing in a hockey stadium. I had just attended my first hockey game, and it had quickly become my new favorite sport. The excitement was palpable, and I wanted to share it with him.

But little did I know, what I thought was a harmless photo would set off a chain of events that would change everything.

When my husband received the picture, I thought nothing of it. I figured he would appreciate it and maybe laugh at my newfound enthusiasm for hockey. However, instead of a simple “cool” or “how’s the game?” I got a message that caught me completely off guard: “I want a divorce.”

At first, I thought he was joking. He was always the playful type, and it seemed like the kind of exaggerated reaction he might make over something trivial. But when he called, his voice was filled with anger, and his words were sharp.

“How long has this been going on?” he demanded.

I was taken aback. “What are you talking about?” I asked, completely confused.

“The shadow!” he snapped, his voice rising. “On your back. Don’t lie to me.”

I took another look at the photo, and that’s when I saw it. The shadow behind me, cast by the bright stadium lights, appeared to form the image of a man standing closely behind me, his hands seemingly resting on my waist. The illusion was uncanny. To anyone who didn’t know the full story, it could look like something suspicious.

“That’s just a shadow,” I tried to explain, feeling a knot form in my stomach. But no amount of reasoning could convince him. The shadow had tricked him into thinking there was another person, someone far too close for comfort. The image had planted seeds of doubt, and no matter how much I explained it was nothing more than an optical illusion, the damage was done.

In his mind, the trust had been broken. He believed the worst, and that perception was now too powerful to ignore. He began questioning everything between us, and suddenly, our relationship was fractured beyond repair.
